Exfoliation should be a key part of any regular skincare routine. Especially as you age! This is because exfoliation gets rid of dead cells and grime that sit on top of your skin, encouraging your cells to renew. As you age your cell renewal naturally slows. Exfoliating regularly can help to stimulate cell production. It can also help clear away dirt and grime. Changes in hormones as you age can also mean your skin produces excess oil, which sits on top of the skin and traps in all the dirt and pollutants. Exfoliating is a gentle process to remove that excess layer and get rid of that dullness.
Three Things Exfoliation Can Do To Help Ageing Skin
Why should exfoliation be a part of your skin care routine for your ageing skin? Here’s three reasons for a start:
Helps with cell renewal
as you age, your cell renewal naturally slows down. Exfoliation gets rid of dead cells and encourages new cells to be produced. This helps to keep skin feeling bright and fresh.
Helps clear skin of pollutants
using a good exfoliator can help to open up pores and cleanse deeply. As your skin ages, free radicals can attack the collagen under your skin, causing a loss in plumpness. Cleansing the skin of pollutants helps to fight against this loss of volume and elasticity in the skin.
Evens skin tone
as your skin ages, you can start to notice age spots or uneven skin tone. This can be due to hormone changes. Exfoliating regularly encourages new cell production and so helps to even skin tone.
How Often Should You Exfoliate?
That all depends. Partly on your unique skin but also on what type of exfoliator you are using. You may only be able to use a harsher scrub a couple of times a week. But your skin is exposed to pollutants, dirt and grime and oil on a daily basis. So choosing a gentle exfoliator that is suitable for everyday use can be great, especially for ageing skin.
Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant and Daily Microfoliant are both designed to be used everyday to help resurface your skin and give it a youthful glow. But which is the best one for your skin?
We put them to the test to find out.
Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant
This is a variant of an exfoliator that can be used everyday. It is designed for normal and ageing skin with a super powered formula to work against pollutants and damage caused to the skin.
Unique super powder formula -to use the powder, you dispense half a teaspoon into wet hands. It lathers up into a paste on your skin. You massage it into your face in circular motions for about a minute, then rinse. The effects are often instantly visible, with brighter and cleaner skin.
Charcoal-based formula - the unique formula helps to remove pollutants from your pores. The formula protects against free radical damage.
Coarse texture - the Superfoliant has a coarser texture than the Microfoliant. This makes it great for skin resurfacing.
Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate - derived from coconut oil, this attracts oil and enables it to be easily washed away with water. It leaves your skin truly cleansed.
Malic acid and lactic acid (AHAs) - together with three enzymes, this combination helps to resurface skin and to fight against acne breakouts.
Red Algae and Tara Fruit Extract - these ingredients help to protect the skin against daily biochemical and environmental triggers. These pollutants can cause signs of premature ageing as they attack the collagen under the skin. They can cause deepening lines and wrinkles.
Niacinamide - also known as Vitamin B3, this ingredient works to help smooth skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and even skin tone
Why Daily Superfoliant might not be for you
Sensitive skin - out of the two products the Superfoliant is the one that is more active in its skin resurfacing properties. This can mean it’s not suitable for sensitive skin.
It’s best used in the evening - although you can use the Superfoliant at any time, its effects are most powerful after a day being exposed to pollutants. If you are definitely not a fan of cleansing and exfoliating at night, the Microfoliant may be a better choice for you.
Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant
This is a microfoliant with a brightening powder formula that is suitable for all skin types. It is a gentle exfoliator that has a soothing complex, making it super gentle while it works to smooth and brighten the skin, getting rid of dead skin cells.
Unique rice-based powder formula - once this is activated by the addition of water, it gently micro-exfoliates the skin and prepares it for the brightening complex
Papain, salicylic Acid and Rice enzymes - which work together to dissolve dead skin cells and grime and leave your skin feeling smoother and brighter
Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract - helps to gently open up the pores for deep cleansing
Gentle formula - it isn’t as coarse as the Superfoliant making it great for more sensitive skin types. You can make it into a creamy paste by rubbing it into your hands. You can then massage it into the skin without it feeling rough or coarse, avoiding the eye area.
Skin Brightening Complex of Licorice, Aspergillus and Grapefruit - this super complex of skin brightening ingredients helps to work on uneven skin tone or areas of pigmentation, which can be an issue for ageing skin.
Why the Daily Microfoliant might not be for you
Ageing skin - the Microfoliant is designed for all skin types and isn’t specifically formulated towards ageing skin concerns, as the Superfoliant is.
Smoother skin - as it is a gentler exfoliant, if you are looking for what will deliver the smoothest skin, the Superfoliant may be more suitable.
Time To Test Them Out!
At Jersey Beauty we love any excuse to try out products! So we all had a try of the Daily Microfoliant and the Daily Superfoliant to let you know how it feels on your skin and what we loved about them both.
You dispense about half a teaspoon of Daily Superfoliant into wet hands. It makes a creamy lather that you can feel the exfoliant in. You massage it gently into your ski, avoiding the eye area. You can really feel the exfoliation so you don’t need a lot of pressure. After a minute you can rinse with water. It comes off really easily and doesn’t leave any residue or gritty feeling like some exfoliants. We found it left skin feeling fresh and super clean.
There is same process of dispensing half a teaspoon of Daily Microfoliant into wet hands and making a creamy paste. This isn’t as rough on the skin. Whereas the Superfoliant felt quite zingy this was a lot gentler on the skin. So it was a bit of a surprise how well it worked! It washes off easily and after a few days people noticed brighter and clearer skin.
