We live in an age where we use technology more than we ever have before. It can sometimes feel like everything we do involves a screen - even reading this blog! Whether that’s a smartphone, laptop, TV or tablet… that’s not to say that technology is a bad thing. Advances in technology also bring great benefits… but what if we said that technology could be a part of the reason your skin is ageing faster?
Blue Light - What is it and why does it matter?
‘Blue light’ is all around us - thanks to the light the sun gives to us. It’s also known as “High Energy Visible” light . That’s because it is the highest energy wavelength of visible light - there’s blue light, then you’re into UV rays. The dangers of exposure to UV light for your skin are commonly known. When the sun’s rays penetrate deep into the skin they can cause free radical damage to the collagen and elastin cells in the deeper layers of the skin. This can cause deepening lines and wrinkles, age spots and sagging skin.
What a lot of people don’t know is that blue light (HEV) can also be damaging to your skin.
This happens in three main ways:
Free radical damage and overexposure to blue light
Researchinto the effects of blue light on the skin has found that exposure to blue light can create reactive oxygen species and free radical damage in the skin over time. This means that blue light can also cause the destruction of collagen making wrinkles and lines appear deeper, skin to sag with the destruction of elastin and age spots, as the cells overproduce melanin to compensate.
Blue light disrupting your sleep pattern
You may have read that checking your phone before you go to sleep can affect your ability to drift off. This is because the blue light emitted is the same as sunlight so it convinces your mind it is still daytime. This can also happen if you are working on a laptop at night - your body may not wind down in the same way as it isn’t sure it is nighttime. How does this affect your skin? A lack of sleep can reduce your blood flow which is needed for your skin to renew itself. Your skin’s natural biorhythms are affected by a lack of sleep.
Blue Light and your body clock
Your body has a natural biological rhythm. Different functions in the body happen at different times. Your body clock is partly regulated by its exposure to daylight. Blue light disrupts that natural rhythm. This can have a big impact on your skin. When you are asleep, that’s when your skin cells renew and replenish themselves - they call it beauty sleep for a reason! When your body clock is confused by blue light exposure, this may throw off the natural processes of renewing skin cells. Combined with the fact that blue light also can cause free radicals damage, this isn’t good news for your skin.
What can you do to prevent your skin from ageing with blue light?
It’s really important to clarify that this isn’t about anti-ageing products. At Jersey Beauty we firmly believe that your skin is amazing, at every age. Natural fine lines and wrinkles should be embraced and are absolutely a part of your beauty! So we aren’t saying go out and buy wrinkle creams that promise to get rid of all signs of ageing because that isn’t healthy or helpful!
We are talking about skin care that addresses the damage blue light can do. Deepening lines and wrinkles, dull and sagging skin can all be signs of premature ageing due to blue light exposure.
What do you need to treat skin affected by blue light?
To counteract the effects of blue light, you need to focus on three things:
Repair - repairing damaged cells and the lipid barrier, designed to protect your skin
Renew - encouraging cell renewal is particularly important as we get older because your skin naturally slows down this process. You need products that stimulate the cells to renew themselves.
Defend - as well as repairing and rebuilding, you also need skincare that protects and defends against the ongoing exposure to blue light. Just as with sun exposure and UV rays, using a HEV protection product can help to stop the penetration of blue light into the deeper layers.
