During the menopause, women notice that their skin becomes drier. For some who have struggled with oily skin, their skin may all of a sudden start to look gorgeous but for lots, dry skin becomes a big skin concern.
The good news is, you don’t have to struggle through menopause with dry skin. With any other skin concern, you adapt your products to target that concern, it’s the same with menopause. There are some fabulous products that are perfect for dry skin that will help your skin remain happy and healthy throughout the menopause.
Menopause aside, everyone's skin actually changes with age. Our skin becomes thinner, it starts to sag, we see fine lines and wrinkles, areas of pigmentation become more pronounced and our skin has a tendency to become drier. Unfortunately, menopause accelerates these skin changes which is why concerns like dry skin show themselves more during menopause.
But why is menopausal skin often drier?
Mostly, it has to do with the loss of estrogen. Pre-menopause, oestrogen has been key to keeping your skin hydrated by keeping up the production of oil so it doesn’t dry out, keeping the lipid barrier strong to prevent moisture loss and supporting the building blocks in your skin that maintain its structure.
During menopause, your oestrogen levels drop. This has an effect on oil production which has an effect on the lipid barrier in your skin. These natural lipids keep the skin hydrated so a reduction will lead to dehydration and that's when you start to notice dryness.
As already mentioned, our skin becomes thinner as we age. In addition, during menopause the upper layer of your skin, the epidermis becomes even thinner, which means it doesn’t act as an effective barrier, causing transepidermal water loss. The result is that the skin can become flaky, dull and dry.
So what moisturiser should I use for dry skin during menopause?
You want to look for lipid-rich products to treat dehydration. Products that have layers of lipids will really help to replenish the skin. A great lipid to look out for is Hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a lipid that can hold a staggering 1,000 times its own weight in water. It draws in moisture so is perfect for really hydrating the skin, giving a youthful glow. Here are a few of our favourite moisturisers that contain hyaluronic acid so are great for putting moisture back into the skin, helping to target skin dryness caused by menopause.
