Last year Dermalogica replaced UltraCalming mist with Redness Relief Essence. Recently, to the delight of loads of our fabulous Jersey customers, they have brought UltraCalming mist back!
With both products on the market, it can be a bit confusing as to which one to use and when. So we thought we would do a quick summary of both and look at the benefits and application of both products.
The first thing to point out is that both of these products are part of the Dermalogica UltraCalming range. The range and these products have been created to deal with sensitivity. It is designed to address the top three concerns of people with sensitive skin: redness, discomfort and dehydration. So basically both UltraCalming Mist and Redness Relief Essence will both reduce skin redness and calm sensitivity. They do however differ in their texture, how they work and how you apply them.
The second thing to point out is that UltraCalming Mist is a toner and Redness Relief Essence is an essence.
A toner has a lightweight and fluid formula that can be spritzed on the skin after cleansing. A toner will provide instant hydration and even out porosity. The unique thing about a toner spray is that it can be used multiple times throughout the day and spritzed over make-up.
An essence has a fluid formula with a more concentrated serum consistency. An essence provides sustained hydration with a targeted and cumulative effect on deeper layers. You press an essence gently into the skin after cleansing. The unique thing about an essence is that the effect is cumulative on the skin following regular daily use so the longer you use it, the more you notice the benefits.
Let’s look at UltraCalming Mist. The name gives it away, it's a mist that you spritz over your skin to calm. You can also spray it to cotton wool and apply to the skin but the beauty of this product is that you can literally spritz over your skin, how easy is that! You can also mist it over your skin throughout the day if you need immediate relief from irritation. Because it is a mist, it is super light so it won’t irritate your skin.
So how does Redness Relief Essence differ? Redness Relief Essence is an essence that you apply to your skin. You wouldn’t use this throughout the day but instead, you would cleanse your skin and then apply Redness Relief Essence. Given the formula of Redness Relief Essence, the bottle needs shaking to mix up the active ingredients before you apply it. Redness Relief Essence works on a deeper level and so will prolonged use, you will notice immediate benefits but also benefits over a longer period of time.
So in summary UltraCalming Mist will refresh, cool and reduce redness and Redness Relief Essence will soothe, restore and reduce redness. Both will reduce redness. The one you choose depends upon whether you prefer a mist with an immediate effect or an essence with more long term effects. Either way, your skin redness will be reduced!
