The key to looking younger: 10 Questions about caring for ageing skin
We get asked all the time about how to handle ageing skin. If you’ve read our blog before you’ll know that at Jersey Beauty we don’t believe in anti-ageing products and trying to turn back the clock. You are beautiful at every age and we embrace the natural process of ageing. But premature ageing as a result of pollution, the environment, free radicals and the way you care for your skin is not OK. We also know that as your skin ages you have natural changes – your skin becomes thinner, takes longer to heal and can show signs of damage. There are a number of ways you can both protect and repair ageing skin.
So we’ve compiled our answers to your top 10 ageing skin related questions.
1. How to prevent my skin from ageing?
Firstly, we love our wrinkles! But we also love protecting our skin from premature ageing because of sun damage or free radicals. That damages often looks like deepening lines and wrinkles. This is because the collagen that keeps your skin plump is destroyed. Using products that stimulate collagen production and rehydrate your skin, with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, can help repair and protect your skin.
2. Is the sun making the skin age faster?
In the UK, we often make the mistake of only reaching for the sunscreen when the sun is shining. But actually your skin needs sun protection throughout the year. UVA and UVB rays attack collagen and elastin in the deeper layers of your skin, which can leave your skin feeling hollow and saggy.
You can either choose to use a separate SPF sunscreen or a booster with SPF built in. We have a wide range at Jersey Beauty Company, specially designed for ageing skin:
At Jersey Beauty we don’t offer ‘miracle’ cures to prevent ageing but we do know that some ingredients can help to repair skin and also prevent further damage. Skin can become radiant, plump and healthy looking again.
Skin care products with a UV shield are great to protect against further sun damage.
Dermalogica BioLumin-C Serum is a new skin care serum that has a unique ultra-stable Vitamin C complex to work on signs of premature ageing skin. It retrains the collagen under your skin to stop skin sagging and renewing the elasticity of your skin. It also brightens darker pigment spots and areas of sun damage and works really deep tackling the causes of dry skin.
At the top end of skin care for ageing skin, is Guinot Crème Age Summum. This is a premium skin care product designed for ageing skin in your 50’s and beyond. It targets four key areas of ageing skin – dark spots and UV damage, wrinkles and fine lines, lack of firmness and dull skin. It’s got a unique formula to help transform ageing skin and leave your skin looking and feeling fresher and, most importantly, healthier.

4. Is dry skin a sign of ageing?
Dry skin can be a sign of ageing and can also make other symptoms of ageing skin worse. Dry skin comes from a lack of oil, which is different to dehydrated skin, that comes from a lack of water. Both can be signs of ageing skin. Dry skin causes damage to the lipid barrier – that’s the layer of oil and cells that protect the more delicate layers of skin underneath. As you age, your skin naturally slows down in production of oil and renewing cells. The key to keeping your skin healthy is keeping it moisturized. Choose a moisturiser that is specially designed for ageing skin to help to repair the lipid barrier and also guard against premature ageing and skin damage.
5. Skin: what causes ‘liver spots’ in older people?
Liver spots, or age spots, are those dark brown patches that appear as you age. They’re caused by hyperpigmentation - where your skin produces too much melanin in certain areas. They are often the result of sun damage. They start to become more prominent as you age because your skin renews itself more slowly. When it comes to protecting your ageing skin against liver spots, you should always use the right sun protection for your skin and consider limiting your sun exposure.
6. Why does ageing slow down wound-healing?
As you get older, your skin naturally goes through some changes. The speed it takes your skin to renew itself slows down. As your body naturally slows down how quickly it renews its cells, this means that wounds on your skin can take longer to heal.
7. Is it true that wearing sunscreen daily slows down skin ageing?
Your skin will age naturally. At Jersey Beauty we don’t believe that’s a bad thing! Fine lines and wrinkles slowly appearing over time is totally natural. However, deeper lines and wrinkles can appear - prematurely ageing your skin. So while you can’t stop the ageing process, you can keep your skin healthy looking. One of the causes of those deepening lines and wrinkles is sun damage. When your skin is exposed daily to the sun, the UV rays attack the collagen, which plumps up your skin and the elastin, which gives your skin its elasticity. The result can be hollow looking and sagging skin. Wearing a sunscreen daily that has UVA and UVB protection can help to protect against sun damage. You should also use skin care products that renew the collagen and elastin in your skin.
8. Does waxing cause premature ageing and wrinkles in skin?
It’s a common myth that the stretching of the lip area, for example, for waxing causes wrinkles. While that isn’t true, what can cause deepening lines and wrinkles is dehydrated skin or sun exposure. When you wax your skin, you can remove some of the natural oils and moisture in the top layers temporarily. Which can leave the skin prone to dehydration, dryness and irritation or sun damage. Make sure you use sun protection and a good moisturiser.
9. What are the best skin care products for anti-ageing?
When it comes to ‘anti-ageing’ products, at Jersey Beauty, we don’t really like that term! We prefer to talk about products that help ageing skin. One of the best ways you can do that is with an overnight product that contains Retinol, also known as Vitamin A. As we’ve already talked about, lines and wrinkles can deepen when free radicals and the sun’s rays attack the collagen and elastin in your skin. This affects the plumpness and elasticity of your skin. Dermalogica Overnight Retinol Repair can help to increase collagen production by 180%! This will help your skin to regain its plump, full feel and reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Another option isDermalogica Biolumin C Serumwhich has an ultra-stable Vitamin C complex that can trains collagen to stop skin sagging and can also help to brighten dull skin.
It’s important not to use both products at the same time. You can use retinol overnight and then Biolumin C in the daytime.
