The Best Skincare Products of 2016
2016 was a really good year in the beauty industry, and Dermalogica had three new products that took us all by surprise. They became the professional choice - beauty bloggers loved them and our Jersey Beauty Company devotees loved them as well.
Watch this video with Beth and Emma, the wonderful Dermalogica skin therapist that's going to help us understand the three new products that came in this year.
Dermalogica Hydrablur Primer
Hydrablur Primer was the first product launched this year, so it was quite exciting when it hit. Dermalogica have a small range of primers already, so this was a really big mover. It is designed for anyone, aged 20's, aged 30's, that is starting to see a bit of dehydration, a little bit of dryness on the skin, maybe a little bit of premature ageing, the odd crow foot or wrinkles.
It has H2O release complex in it, which is an ingredient that Dermalogica have never used before, and it slowly releases the moisture throughout the day, perfect for dry skin.
What is the purpose of a primer?
As part of your skin care routine, a primer, generally, should be applied to the skin after you have moisturised and applied your SPF, but before you actually apply your makeup. The purpose of it is to adhere the skin and the makeup, so that your makeup lasts longer. With Dermalogica primer, as it's come from a skincare line, it is also going to give you good fundamental skincare properties as well. For example, the Hydra Blur will hydrate the skin and blur out any fine lines and dehydration.
What makes Hydrablur Primer so good in comparison to the rest of the Dermalogica primers?
There's a reason we think Hydrablur Primer is one of the best skin care products of 2016. It does 2 things really well:
- It works for dehydration
- It works for open pores
It comes down to the skin aspects of it as well, so it isn't just there to adhere your makeup. It's lightweight, it's non-greasy, but it is made of silicone as well. There's where the name Hydrablur comes from, and it's often been referred to as almost like an Instagram filter for the skin.
What is dehydration?
Dehydrated skin can often be misconstrued for fine lines, wrinkles on the skin, but actually, it is coming from the skin that is drying out. It's not producing as much moisture as we'd quite like and you'll be able to see it on your own skin.
If you have a close look generally, it will be almost like criss-cross lines, very small criss-cross lines.
What can Hydra Blur Primer do for you if you have open pores?
Generally, you've got your skin care side for open pores. There's actually products that you can use, like certain face washes, that can help with the pores but to actually minimise the appearance of them, the primer is brilliant.
Pores can oxidise which can make them slightly darker in appearance, that's often known as blackheads. That's basically where the oil has come to the surface, it's met with oxygen and it's turned a darker colour.
Congestion can also turn into open pores and that can often be like lumps and bumps. Hydra Blur will help to blur those out and give you a nice even, smooth, flawless finish.
"I love it. I can't wear my makeup without actually applying the Hydra Blur first. You notice such a difference and if you don't wear primer, you do find that your makeup doesn't last you through half the day. It's definitely an investment for somebody that is a makeup wearer and just generally wants to just even out and smooth the skin."
How to apply Hydrablur Primer?
To apply Hydrablur Primer you don't need a lot. You want about a 5 to 10 pea piece, depending on yourself. You want to take that onto your fingertips and apply it to your forehead, cheeks, chin, and neck before applying your makeup.
Dermalogica Charcoal Rescue Masque
The number one reason why this is so popular is because it gives you an instant result. It's an all in one product. It's something that we call multi-functional. The two main properties of it is it's deep cleansing (for anyone with congested, oilier skin types, for things like breakouts it's brilliant or to pull all the oils to the surface and really clean and clear any of that area) and exfoliation properties (It does have niacin in mind in there. It is active in the way it works and brilliant for any open pores).
How to apply Charcoal Rescue Masque without getting messy?
Put it on before you are about to get in the bath or the shower. If you can pre-cleanse, cleanse, take your makeup off then apply. Do your little bits and bobs that you have to do before you are kind of getting in. Then once you're actually in the bath or the shower it can be rinsed off quickly. Or what I say, it just makes it cleaner and simple. It is fairly easy to apply it's just kind of finding that exact area that you want to put it on.
Some people might apply it to the whole face, others may just choose to apply it to the t-zone, the typically more oily and congested areas that we see.
To apply Charcoal Rescue Masque, you want about a 10 pence piece amount. You want to get it so it is full grey on the area. Apply to the area that you wish.
What kind of skin type is the Charcoal Rescue Masque for?
Generally, all skin types. If you are basically buying the product for dull skin to get a little bit more brightness then I would just apply to those particular areas, might be the cheeks, the chin. If you're an oily skin, the t-zone, chin area, so that you're targeting exactly where your concern lies.
Dermalogica Phyto Replenish Oil
People love this one. Phyto Replenish Oil was released in September and it's absolutely brilliant, people went mad for it.
It works slightly differently you actually apply this product in the daytime. The whole idea behind it is that it's going to give you that instant dewiness and that glow. You can use it in the morning before you apply your moisturiser, generally seems to be the general method.
Why is it so good for ageing skin?
It has a dual action. It works in almost like a synergy, we have orchid oil, orchid flower extract, camellia oil and vitamin A.
Phyto Replenish Oil is able to help to build that top layer of skin up for your own protection but also for the actual appearance of strong, healthy skin. The second thing is the hydration phase. Generally, with it being an oil it is like we said earlier rich in fatty acids. It will help with the moisture content but it will be releasing moisture throughout the day as well which is quite a common theme really.
It's an ongoing product. You're not just getting results as soon as you put it on it is continuously going to work to the end.
The last thing it does is it shields the skin. It's rich in antioxidants again especially this time of year we are exposed to different crazy weathers, air conditioners, heatings are coming on now as well. That again will breakdown and kind of effect the appearance of the skin. It's a multi-functioning product.
"I've been wearing it before my makeup. This is kind of my routine on the table at the minute because I always wear Hydra Blur before I put my makeup on but I've been mixing Phyto in with skin smoothing cream and it's worked brilliantly."
How to apply Phyto Replenish Oil?
To apply Phyto Replenish Oil, you want to use about four to six drops. You'll find, if you're a slightly oilier skin, it will be four and slightly more dehydrated skin you'll be more towards the six.
Apply onto your fingertips, forehead, cheek, chin, and neck. We do have a massage available called the dewy skin massage to actually apply the product which is available from Jersey.
So there you have it! Here at the Jersey Beauty Co we know that the quest for healthy skin can sometimes feel like a bit of a minefield. What with talk of cleansing, picking the right moisturizer or treatment for your sensitive skin, oily skin, normal skin (what is 'normal skin' anyway?) things can get confused.
