The 3 Best Ways to Soften Fine Lines and Wrinkles

At the Jersey Beauty Company, we love the ageing process - it is a natural part of life. We we are all getting older and that is always a good thing. We do recognise, as we get older, that our skin changes, and we think it’s really important to understand what’s happening.
We chatted to skin therapist Christine about how we can protect our skin against wrinkles deepening really fast, and how we can smooth fine lines. Above all, we want to help you to understand the skin you’re in, to know your skin as you age, and the wrinkles and lines that come as a natural part of the ageing process. Christine gave us three top tips to soften fine lines and wrinkles.
1. We need to understand our skin as it ages
Knowledge is power. If we understand how our skin works, and how fine lines and wrinkles are formed, we will be better able to maintain a healthy, balanced complexion. We have to understand that our skin ageing is natural, and something to be celebrated, but we also need to understand how our skin is changing to be able to look after ourselves well. As skin therapist Christine explains, part of this is knowing when to begin treatments targeted towards lines and wrinkles.
“A lot of people just specifically use products simply targeted towards lines and wrinkles. But they use them too early on. So what happens is you get into your 40s and 50s and your skin is used to them products already, so they are not going to do what you want them to do and won’t give you that sort of like plump tightness suppleness that you want.”
Christine explains, in our twenties, we should just be focused on maintaining our healthy skin, in our thirties, we should introduce eye serums and start to understand how our skin is structured, the collagen and elastin that we need to maintain more as we age. This will help us as we age to keep our skin healthy and protected.
We also need to understand a bit of the science behind the ageing of our skin, namely that there are two factors at work - intrinsic factors, and extrinsic factors.
- Intrinsic factors are genetically programmed changes to the way our skin works - for example, as our skin ages, our cell turnover rate decreases, which can leave our skin looking dull.
- Extrinsic factors are environmental wear on the skin, for example, exposure to daylight and everyday pollution, and this is what causes most of the changes we see on our skin.
We need to use products that work to protect our skin against the effects of these extrinsic and intrinsic factors.
A part of understanding our skin is understanding products specifically developed for certain stages of the ageing process. Dermalogica’s Age Smart range, available from Jersey Beauty Company, is specifically developed for skin in our 40’s, 50’s and over as it works plumping up collagen, renewing elastin and stimulating your cells. This is a direct response to the intrinsic factors our skin faces at this age - as our cell turnover decreases, our skin needs some help to renew itself and to stay healthy. This will help to reduce the appearance of deepening wrinkles - fortifying the skin through the layers with collagen and renewing elastin.

2. We need Vitamin C
When protecting the skin against environmental factors, vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant to everyday pollution. As skin therapist Christine explains, “pollution is everywhere and when certain particles of oxygen that are charged, enter into our skin, they literally they pair up with some of our collagen to make what’s called a free radical. It destroys our particles of collagen in our skin. So it destroys our skin’s structure.” This causes wrinkles, as the collagen in our skin helps it maintain its elasticity and structure. Products containing Vitamin C act as an antioxidant, stopping free radicals forming and stopping the destruction of collagen, therefore stopping wrinkles from forming or deepening.
Vitamin C not only works as protection for our skin against pollution, it also works to help skin cell repair and regeneration. As we increase the antioxidants in the skin through the use of Vitamin C, our skin can work to repair the sun and environmental damage.
At Jersey Beauty Company, we have some fantastic products packed full of Vitamin C. We have the Guinot Serum Eclaircissant Vitamin C which is a radiance treatment serum. It works to even your complexion and specifically aims to reduce the appearance of brown spots. It contains pure Vitamin C to boost and lighten skin tone. We also have the Ark Radiance Serum, which is one for glow-seekers. The Radiance Serum creates luminous, dewy skin in an instant, it’s potent formula softens and brightens while reducing the look of sunspots and age spots. Skin appears to radiate light from within.
3. We need a good night skin care routine
They call it beauty sleep for a reason! Skin therapist Christine lets us into a little secret:
“the first thing that was drilled into us when we did beauty school is that your skin renews itself between 12 and 3 at night. So it does all the hard work for you. That’s when your cells start to kick in and start to renew. So anything that can enhance that night time skin is the best.”
Your skin naturally repairs itself, restoring the stress caused by the day and the exposure to pollution and the environment. Your stress hormones decrease and your oil production decreases. So this gives products that help to renew your skin the best chance of being most effective.
This is especially good news when we all know how busy life can get! Understanding that our skin renews itself during the night means if we can get our night skincare routine right, a lot of the hard work is done for us as we sleep. It’s important to note as well, that at night our transepidermal water loss increases, that is the name for the loss of water through the skin. While this causes the skin’s protective hydrolipid barrier to weaken, allowing for a greater penetration of active ingredients, it also means without a good routine, our skin can become dehydrated at night.
At Jersey Beauty Company, we have plenty of choice of night skin care products. Dermalogica’s Overnight Repair Serum is a supercharge night time skin recovery! It syncs with your body's nighttime recovery process, helping to increase luminosity while minimizing fine lines, dryness, and loss of elasticity.
For a more intense treatment, Dermalogica’s Overnight Retinol Repair has a high-concentrate of pure retinol, which simultaneously exfoliates dead skin cells and combats signs of premature ageing- just a small amount increases skin elasticity by a remarkable 180%!
The luxury of Decleor’s Neroli Night Balm with its lush, melt-in texture, offers all the benefits of a made-to-measure aromatic night-care treatment for all skin types.
If you prefer a cream, Jersey Beauty Company stock the Guinot Newhite Brightening Night Cream, which helps to brighten the complexion by reducing the presence of melanin in the skin and reduce dark spots for a more uniform appearance of the skin.
