Truthfully, there are many ways you can increase the health of your bodily skin. So, we gathered a selection of Skin Therapist tips and laid them out below. Read on and delight in healthy skin, no matter what shape or size your beautiful body is.
Did you know that one humble tomato could soothe and heal skin in the event of sunburn?
Sure, we don’t advocate sunburn here at Jersey Beauty Co, but you and I cannot deny the fact that we have overcooked our precious complexion at least once – or twice – in our lifetimes. We’ve all been there. Falling asleep sans sun cream, blistering in climates anew to our bodies. Surprisingly fruits such as tomatoes – or a bag of frozen peas – can help.
But the simple truth is: if you have wrinkles or age spots on your arms necks and legs, it is most likely due to sun damage. Burning your skin in the heat will eventually result in age spots and wrinkles on your complexion. Though this is not an instant process, UVA rays will zap collagen levels, creating creases in your skins layers. Added to this, lentigines, commonly known as liver spots or age spots, will become more prevalent with age. (Those years of using carrot oil and sunbeds will most likely catch up on you.)
Sure, skin on our arms, neck and legs looks and feels different from that of our faces. Yet, our entire body requires the same level of protection and prevention, with as much attention we give to looking after our face. Whether you’re looking to prevent or ease such con
cerns, sunscreen should be listed as the number one remedy in helping to prevent wrinkles and smooth fine lines.
When it comes to sunscreen, many people can be overwhelmed and confused by out of date advice and the variety of information available to us. SPF (sun protection factor) indicates how long it will take for the sun’s UVB rays to burn our delicate skin. For example, an SPF of 10 would allow for a person to stay in the sun for 10 times longer than their skin could naturally handle, without burning. Numbers and information such as this don’t take into account the use of sunscreen (how and when we apply it) and UVA rays, which are the same rays emitted by harmful tanning booths. Dermalogica recently discussed in their ‘Living Skin’ publication that UVA rays penetrate the skin more deeply and play a major part in accelerating skin ageing.
Dermalogica’s Protection 50 Sport SPF 50 will provide broad-spectrum protection for both the face and body. This sunscreen stays water resistant for 40 minutes and is great for those looking for a high level of SPF and sports enthusiasts, (as regular exercise affects your levels of sun protection). Protection 50 Sport contains liquorice extract, an antioxidant which provides soothing and calming benefits and Olesome Technology which is a safflower derived su
nscreen filled capsule that enhances SPF performance and counteracts moisture loss. Using this product in the summer months especially will stop wrinkles from deepening and prevent new fine lines from appearing.
"Bottom line: it is essential to your skin’s health to first grab a sun cream bottle in order to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on your neck, arms and legs. If you’re looking for a gradual glow but end up with a beetroot coloured burn, it’s worth remembering our number one recommendation will always be a broad spectrum sunscreen. Used liberally and often we can prevent the signs of ageing so easily and end up eating that tomato rather than soothing your skin with it!"
OK, confession time: on average, how many times a week do you moisturise the skin on your body, head to toe?
You might be brilliant at moisturising your facial skin, but are you really skin-savvy, when it comes to conditioning your arms, neck and legs? Skin therapist, Nicola, tells us that skin on your body tends to be drier, as it is often forgotten. Think about it: your body is typically covered in clothes. Fabrics absorb your natural oils making your skin dry and flaky.
As essential oils and nutrients are stripped away, skin looses its plump and smooth texture and appears dehydrated. Picture a grape in your minds eye: grapes are full of juicy goodness to refresh our bodies. But if a grape is dried out, it becomes wrinkled in appearance. In fact, it turns into a small, creased sultana. Of course, as moisture levels rapidly decrease, the top layer of your skin will develop silvery fine lines, wrinkles and loss of elasticity.
Dermalogica’s Body Hydrating Cream contains lactic acid, which makes skin on your arms, and legs feel smooth and resurfaced. Combined with green tea to soothe irritation, this body product is key to boosting skins health, as sensitivity will often be the precursor to dry skin and so our bodies can feel both dry and sensitive, due to our clothes or lack of moisture.
Remember: at Jersey Beauty Co we celebrate ageing and do not believe that wrinkles should trigger feelings of shame. Yet, simply put, wrinkles on our arms, neck and legs are typically a sign that skin has suffered some neglect and is craving a glug of hydration!
One simple way you can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles is to use Guinot’s Gommage Facile Body Exfoliator. Not only is this product a beautiful colour (and looks stunning on your bathroom shelf) it also contains extracts of natural vegetable fibres. This means, it will buff away all of your dead skin cells whilst giving the skin on your arms, neck and legs the lipids and oily goodness it needs to stay healthy and smooth, with fewer wrinkles.
Skin Therapist Nicola tells us that it is important to spend longer applying Guinot’s Gommage Facile to your elbows, in slow, small circular motions. (Dead skin cells will most likely collect on your elbows and so it is important to spend extra TLC on this area.) This wonder-product can either be applied to a dry skin or slightly dampened skin, in the shower or bath. Simply rinse away after application. Ideally, you should be buffing away those dead skill cells on your arms and legs twice a week. You will notice a much smoother body skin and you will also get better absorption of your body moisturiser. Truthfully, this is one way to prevent future fine lines and wrinkles on your body, as well as soften existing structural damage on your beautiful skin.
This light cream has a lower molecular structure, so it s very quickly and deeply down into your skin’s layers, with a firming action. Not only does it smooth wrinkles, Guinot’s Longue Vie Cou also reduces pigmentation marks (or age spots,) which come about due to lack of suncream application on our complexion. The skin on your neck tends tobe thinner, due to stretching, and so elastin fibres naturally decline. Combined with the fact that most of us forget to apply product to our neck, this is one skin area that suffers wrinkles due to disregard. Guinot’s Longue Vie Cou is an ultra-concentrated skin product and it is brilliant if you have creases on the neck area.
One final area that is often neglected is our legs. Be it loose skin, cellulite or dehydration, our legs can look significantly aged by the quality of our skin, particularly on our shins. Symptoms of dry skin ranging from deep set lines to flakiness all contribute to legs that ultimately look older and it’s a common complaint on the popular website mumsnet.com. In order to retain a hydrated, healthy glow moisturisers work to improve the integrity of the stratum corneum (the outer most layer of the epidermis) acting as a barrier to water loss and replacement of skin lipids and other compounds. Some soaps and body washes can dry out our skin so it’s important to add moisture back in as soon as you’ve dried off after bathing.
Decleor Moisturing and Firming Body Emulsion is a must have body moisturiser that envelopes skin in a comforting and protecting layer of moisture. By rehydrating rhe skin it improves skin elasticity and firmness enhancing the overall appearance and softens skin’s surface layers to give a velvety smoothness. Skin looks energised and revitalised and combats those areas of extreme dryness we’ve discussed such as lines on the shins, knees and ankle area. Coconut oil and Vitamin E provide all the nourishing hydration needed.
