How We Do Business: How Much Should You Pay For Dermalogica Products?
At Jersey Beauty Company, we really value honesty. We understand that in the past some companies haven’t always been totally honest in the beauty industry – you have had to put up with companies trying to sell ‘miracle’ products with a big price tag, without anyone explaining the science behind how they work or what your money is actually buying.
That’s why we’re so passionate at Jersey Beauty Company about skin education. We know understanding your unique skin is the first step to you getting the right products for your skin’s individual needs. And that is also why we are always honest with our Jersey Beauty family.
So when Dermalogica increased their prices in April 2017, we wanted to be open and honest, without flannel or fluff about how this would affect you and the prices you may pay for Dermalogica products on our site. We did a live video about this at the time, but we wanted t share it in a blog, as some of you have been asking about price increases.
So it starts with 1st April 2017, when Dermalogica’s retail product prices increased by up to 9%.
What did April’s price rise mean for Jersey Beauty?
Dermalogica products are packed full of active ingredients and the price reflects the quality of the skin care range. We are often asked at Jersey Beauty Company how we provide such great prices and discounts on Dermalogica. The answer is pretty simple - we offer Dermalogica at the lowest possible profit for us. We know it’s a great company and we believe in the products. We don’t want cost to be a restriction for our customers. So we make approximately 1% profit after shipping, salaries etc. The price increase was for everybody, but some companies who made a larger profit might not see as much of a price increase, because they were already charging more.
Another really important thing to explain is that Dermalogica think very differently to other people in the beauty industry. Traditionally, when you think about suppliers, you might think of a pricing system where the more you buy, the lower your cost price. So that discount can be passed to customers - so the more you buy, the more you save.
But the Beauty industry is not a standard industry!
For a start, different brands have different pricing systems.
Guinot, for example, have a set price system. What that means is, it doesn’t matter how much you sell, the cost price is the same. There’s no discounts for higher stock purchases, which makes it harder to pass discounts on to you the consumer.
Price Bands System
Dermalogica on the other hand, have a thing called “price bands”. There are 3 Dermalogica price bands: ABC
- A – you as a company pay a standard cost for stock. This is the level all companies start at with Dermalogica.
- B – once you have sold X volume, the cost price goes up. Yep, you read that right – up not down! So you sell more, you pay more for the cost price.
- C – once you have sold XX volume, so you reach the next bracket of sales, your cost price goes up further.
To sum that up, the more you buy, the more you pay as a retailer. This is the reason why we can’t heavily discount Dermalogica products. We are already operating on a 1% profit margin, as we explained earlier, and the more we sell of a product, the lower that margin will go.
Why can other companies discount Dermalogica?
Well, we can’t speak for how other companies operate. But they may be on a different pricing band and so have a larger margin to discount.
One thing to be cautious about is whether a company offering large discounts are a genuine supplier of Dermalogica. We have explained to you how the figures work. So if you see an online company offering huge discounts, it is often too good to be true. There is a lot of fake products on the market sadly. It’s never nice to be duped, but when it comes to skin care products, it’s really important you are getting genuine Dermalogica products, with the genuine ingredients, to protect your skin.
If you’re not sure, you can check on Dermalogica’s website to see if a company is a genuine supplier.
What if we are not happy with Dermalogica prices?
We’ve had quite a few people get in touch and let us know that they aren’t happy with the price increases. We suggest you get in touch with Dermalogica directly, as they control the price setting. You can email them email@example.com
It is worth remembering that Dermalogica are also responding to the changes because of Brexit. They import from the USA - Brexit means costs have gone up for them internally so they have passed this cost on.
Is Dermalogica worth the spend?
Dermalogica is a high quality brand. We stock Dermalogica at Jersey Beauty Company because we believe in the ethos of the company – Dermalogica understand that a one-size-fits-all skin care routine doesn’t exist and specialise in face-mapping for specific needs. So when we’re asked if Dermalogica is worth the spend, we have to say that depends. On what is best for your unique skin. You may love your Dermalogica products, and not want to swap. You may be living on a certain budget. We are here to help you get the best skin care regime for your needs.
If we are only making 1% profit how are we able to offer discounts?
We’ve already mentioned the tight profit margin we work within. So a common question we get asked about Dermalogica, is how we can offer any discounts. The answer is simple -usually we rely on the fact that people generally order more than one item at a time, which brings down postage and packaging costs. We keep margins super tight and pass on that extra saving to you whenever we can.
Is there a cheaper alternative for your Dermalogica moisturiser?
At Jersey Beauty Company, our first and only concern is that you get the right skin care your unique skin so you can be the happy remarkable you. That might be Dermalogica, but it will be the ingredients that work for YOU, not the brand necessarily. It just might be that Dermalogica have the right mix of ingredients for your unique skin concerns.
Should you pay more money for active ingredients?
Some cheaper moisturisers are good, and not all expensive products are good. It isn’t the cost – it’s the active ingredients we need to focus on. The reason Dermalogica products cost more, as with some of the brands on our site, is because they are packed full of active ingredients. But whatever your budget, we want you to have a great skin care routine and you can get great products with active ingredients for a reasonable cost.
What do we mean when we talk about active ingredients? Well, let’s look at some of your favourite Dermalogica products and highlight at least one active ingredient in them.
Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Booster– this has hyaluronic acid – which helps your skin to hold more water, so is great for dehydrated skin.
Dermalogica Overnight Retinol Repair – this is high in Retinol. A lot of products don’t have a concentrate of retinol in them. This has 0.5% which may not sound a lot, but when it comes to retinol, that is a lot! It’s one of the amazing ingredients that makes this product great for skin cell renewal.
Dermalogica Skin Perfecting Primer SPF 30 – this has Peptides in it. Peptides not only firm the skin but also protect against free radical damage.
Dermalogica Antioxidant Hydramist – the active ingredients in this toner are antioxidants. They comes in many different guises but they basically help protect your skin from the effects of the environment.
Dermalogica Pure Light SPF 50– the active ingredient is SPF – a lot of moisturisers will contain SPF, which means you are protected against damage from the sun’s UVB rays. If you are looking for an alternative, remember you will also need adequate UVA protection.
Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Balance – the active ingredient we’d highlight here are AHA’s. AHA’s help with skin renewal and getting rid of dead skin cells.
At JBC, we think the most important thing is that you get the skin care that is right for your unique skin concerns. It isn’t about a brand, it’s about you – being the happy remarkable you.
We don’t ever want our customers to be made to feel like you need to buy an expensive product to zap wrinkles or change your skin. Your skin is unique – just like you. We want you to find the right combination of skin care products that give you happy, healthy skin.
That’s why we created our free skin profile tool. You can use this as a starting point for finding the right skin care products for you.
