Salon brands are amazing, you have to find the right skin care for your ageing skin concerns.
When it comes to choosing skincare products, we love salon brands. When you buy a brand used in salons by skincare experts, you can be sure that you are investing in a high quality product, professionally developed to an excellent standard. What are the best salon brands for your ageing skin? We put our favourites to the test in the ultimate battle of the salon brands!
Why French women love visiting beauty salons
Whilst salons are still seen in the UK as a luxury visit, in France women are encouraged to regularly visit the salon from a young age. They know that salons are a place to get expert skin care advice and to discover the best skin care products for their unique skin. As you age your skin changes which often means your skincare should change too. That’s why French women continue to visit the salon to ensure they are using the best active ingredients to treat their skin concerns.
When Nadia Payot started the very first beauty school in Paris in 1925, she did so with the firm belief that salons should be filled with salon experts. We now have beauty salons in the UK that are filled with skin care therapists who have trained and are experienced in their specialist subject. Skin care therapists choose carefully the products they use in their salons, making sure they find products with active ingredients and skin care based in science. Brands such as Guinot, Dermalogica and Payot pride themselves on their dedicated laboratories where skincare scientists work to research and develop the latest formulas to have the maximum benefit for your skin.
Why are salon brands good for ageing skin?
As your skin ages there are a number of processes that start to slow down. Your cell turnover rate naturally decreases and so your skin often needs some help in the process of demasquation (exfoliation and cell renewal). Your sebaceous glands that produce the sebum (oil) that keeps the lipid barrier intact can be affected by changing hormones and sometimes produce less or more oil, both of which can cause skin concerns! Your skin naturally produces less elastin and collagen - the stuff that keeps your skin taut and plump - which can lead to deepening lines and wrinkles and sagging skin.
Skin care products for ageing skin are specifically formulated to treating these and other skin concerns, giving your skin a boost. As your skin ages there’s no need to not have healthy glowing skin!
Round 1 Makeup Remover
Ageing concern: dull skin, open pores
We are big fans of the double cleanse at Jersey Beauty - that’s the idea that it’s best to cleanse your skin twice in the morning and in the evening. The first cleanse removes makeup, surface dirt and grime and oil. The second cleanse gets deep into the pores and address specific skin concerns.
So for the first cleanse, what makeup removers should you be considering for ageing skin?
Precleanse is an oil based makeup remover that works in two steps for ageing skin. First of all, you apply the oil onto the skin. It actually has six types of oil - Olive Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil, Safflower Oil, Kukui Nut Oil, Borage and Oryza (Rice Bran) Oil. They work together to act like a magnet for oil, dirt and grime and to dissolve makeup gently on the skin. The second stage is to add a small amount of water to emulsify the precleanse solution. This draws the dirt and impurities from the surface of the skin and then you can rinse the skin clean.
Is Precleanse a good idea for oily skin?
It may sound strange thinking about using an oil based cleanser for oily skin but actually Precleanse works like a magnet on excess oil - attracting it and drawing it off the skin. So this is a great way to get oily skin really clean and fresh!
Once you have completed the first cleanse, the next stage is to use a second cleanser that treats your individual skin concerns. Here are three of our favourites and what’s great about them for ageing skin!
Dermalogica Skin Resurfacing Cleanser
This is a part of the AGE Smart range and so is specifically formulated for older skin types. The Skin Resurfacing Cleanser is great for dull looking skin as it gently but effectively exfoliates the skin, thanks to lactic acid, which is an alpha hydroxy acid. The lactic acid in this cleanser has the effect of getting rid of dead cells on the surface to leave a smoother and polished skin tone. This also helps the other active ingredients in your skincare routine to be better absorbed.
At the same time, tocopheryl acetate (Vitamin E) works as an antioxidant to condition and enhance your skin’s softness and strengthen the skin’s natural moisture barrier.
This is a highly active cleanser so if you have sensitive skin it may not be the right choice for you. It is great for oily skin concerns and combination skin.
For a gentle cleansing lotion, Lait Hydra Fraicher is an oil based cleansing gel-cream. A bit like Precleanse, this gel cream loves oil and is water soluble so it attracts and dissolves dirt and oil to leaving your skin feeling really clean. At the same time, the extract of cucumber refreshes, softens and moisturises the skin which is great if your skin is more sensitive. Also great news for ageing skin, it has aloe vera which moisturises and stimulates cellular regeneration, which naturally decreases with age.

Payot Gel Demaquillant D’tox
A common concern for ageing skin can be an excess of oil production. This may be something that is new as your skin ages. Many of us who have never had oily skin find, with hormone changes during menopause, our skin is now overproducing sebum. This is a foamy cleanser that works to get rid of surface sebum and also to treat breakouts. This is because it has cinnamon, which is a great tool for fighting breakouts. It also smells amazing!
If you have oily skin and are looking for a cleanser that will address this and also is foamy for a deep cleanse, this is for you!

Round 3 Exfoliator
Ageing concern: Detoxifying the skin, slow skin cell renewal
We’ve already discovered that as we age our skin needs a bit of help in encouraging cell renewal and exfoliation. It is also always a good idea to detoxify the skin - cleansing is one thing but getting rid of dead skin cells and toxins is really important to stimulate new healthy skin. It’s how we get that glow we’re all after!
So what are the best exfoliators for ageing skin?
Dermalogica Multivitamin Thermafoliant
When it comes to exfoliators, there are two different types of exfoliation - chemical and physical. Physical exfoliators use abrasive ingredients to scrub the skin and physically remove dead skin cells. Chemical exfoliators work to dissolve the glue that holds dead skin cells together, aiding in the demasqueation of the skin. Multivitamin Thermafoliant has both physical and chemical exfoliators and also uses a unique formula that heats on contact with the skin.
The unique thermal technology of this exfoliant helps to drive active ingredients deeper into the skin for a powerful exfoliation. Resurfacing microgranules work to gently polish dull skin, getting rid of dead cells to reveal smoother, fresher skin. At the same time the unique thermal technology is activated when it is mixed with water. This stimulates the penetration of skin-sloughing Salicylic Acid and Retinol, chemical exfoliators that can work deeper into the skin. Meanwhile it has Prickly Pear Extract which accelerates the skin's natural exfoliation process.
This is a strong exfoliator which heats on contact with the skin, making it not always ideal for sensitive skin.
If you have dry or sensitive skin it may be tempting to avoid using an exfoliator as this could irritate the skin further. But Gommage Biologique is a great choice for your sensitive skin - it is a chemical exfoliator but has natural fruit acids, rather than harsher salicylic or lactic acid. It works with a gentle ‘peel’ action, removing dead skin cells with a gentle keratolytic action.
It is really effective and can leave your skin feeling refreshed and glowing - but without the use of harsher ingredients that may not be good for sensitive skin.
Payot are firm believers, like a lot of French women, that cleansing, scrubbing, is the way to radiant healthy skin. Rather than using physical exfoliators, French women often choose to have a high quality chemical peel at a salon. In between, they focus on a good cleansing routine, involving face masks. Payot have created Uni Skin Masque Magnetique which is a very different type of face mask, that we love! It involves magnet therapy. The mask goes onto dry skin and has iron as an active ingredient. This works to draw out impurities. After five minutes you use a specially provided magnet in a tissue to remove the mask, and with it the impurities that have been drawn out of the skin. At the same time, the other active ingredients such as beeswax and shea butter are left on the skin to continue to work to soften, protect and moisturise the skin.
This is a really effective deep cleanse for dry skin and doesn’t need water so can be done anywhere! It is also great for ageing skin - in fact 95% of women using the mask remarked how it made their skin appear younger!

Round 4 Serum
Ageing concern: Dull skin, sagging skin and hollow looking skin
At Jersey Beauty we love a good serum! It can be a great way to give your skin a boost and also to target specific skin concerns with dedicated active ingredients at a higher concentration. When it comes to ageing skin, we love using serums that target dull skin - brightening the skin and stimulating cell renewal. We also love serums that target skin that feels saggy, hollow and has deepening lines and wrinkles. We know this is often a result of a slowing down in production of elastin and collagen in the deeper layers of the skin - serums are great for stimulating production and tightening the skin.
Whilst there is often a lot of talk about retinol (Vitamin A) for ageing skin, Vitamin C is also a great ingredient in serums to boost skin health.
Dermalogica Biolumin C Serum
Dermalogica’s Biolumin C Serum is a super powered Vitamin C serum, that has two ultra stable forms of Vitamin C. The problem with Vitamin C is that although it is a natural antioxidant and can help to boost collagen production and protect and heal your skin, that power hasn’t always been so effective in serums. This is because serums have struggled to retain the effectiveness of Vitamin C once it comes into contact with the air. This serum has an ultra-stable Vitamin C complex, two forms of Vitamin C that remain stable and are more effective at getting results. It also has a designer peptide which can can actually retrain your collagen to stop your sagging skin. It also has chia seed oil that is 60% Omega 3s, making it an absolute treat for dry skin to put back in moisture and rebuild the lipid barrier. It has lactic acid that works to gently exfoliate, brighten and even skin tone.
This is a potent serum and an SPF should be used (if you aren’t already using one!) to protect your skin from sun damage whilst using this serum.

Guinot Serum Eclaircissant Vitamin C

It has pure Vitamin C - before you start the treatment you mix the powder and serum together to get the maximum benefits of this active ingredient - to brighten the skin. It also has melanoxyl to target areas of hyperpigmentation. Guinot also have a potent serum with active Vitamin C. Payot Concentre Eclat is a Vitamin C Serum that is packed full of active ingredients to boost ageing skin. Where most Vitamin C serums have one or two types of alpha hydroxy acids - that’s the chemical exfoliators to remove dead skin cells for brighter, fresher skin - Concentre Eclat has a whopping 5 different types of AHAs - pumpkin extract, glycolic acid, citric acid, lactic acid and mandelic acid. They each penetrate the skin to different levels and have an amazing effect combined at brightening and renewing your ageing skin.
At the same time, this powerful serum also has 4 different types of vitamins: A to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, C for skin retexturing, E to protect your ageing skin and K to reduce the appearance of rosacea and uneven skin tones and blemishes.

Round 5 Moisturiser
Ageing concern: radiance, hydration
At every age moisturiser is key to healthy, happy skin. French women understand this which is why, when they reach their 40s, their skin can look up to 4 years younger than women in the UK. That’s the effect of proper moisturiser that both treats and protects your unique skin.
Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF50
Using a daily SPF, whether as a separate step or as a part of your moisturiser, should be key at every age but particularly for older skin. Regardless of whether it is sunny outside or not, UV rays will attack your skin. Dynamic Skin Recovery contains AGE Smart ingredients which enhance your skin's natural ability to fight skin-ageing free radicals (Reactive Oxygen Species) caused by exposure to the sun’s UV rays. This medium weight oil based moisturiser can also help prevent the signs of ageing caused by sugar reacting with proteins in skin (AGEs) and the formation of collagen-degrading MMPs brought on by UV rays. Using this moisturiser as a part of your daily skin care routine can not only provide hydration, with the active ingredient we love for hydrating skin - hyaluronic acid but also can work to protect the skin against UV damage that can cause premature ageing.
Guinot also have a UV protecting moisturiser for ageing skin, specially formulated for those who have concerns over uneven skin tone. This moisturiser has melanoxyl to treat hyperpigmentation, vitamin C to brighten the skin tone and encapsulated unifying pigments to reduce uneven skin tone and pigmentation.
It is good for sensitive skin as it is a gentle cream formula that isn’t too heavy on the skin but gives an even glow.
For a moisturiser that helps to address collagen production, My Payot Jour has retinyl palmitate, which is a less irritating form of Vitamin A (retinol) to help to stimulate collagen production, to plump up the skin. It is a ich moisturising face cream with shea butter that is an emollient with Vitamin E to protect and heal dry and irritated skin. It is also packed full of fruit extracts to exfoliate, soothe and protect your skin.

Round 6 Eye Cream
Ageing Concern - Eye bags, crows feet
When it comes to ageing skin, the eye area can be a common concern - especially as the skin in the eye area is more delicate and so can’t be treated with general face products. It’s important to remember that while wrinkles are totally natural and should be embraced as a part of our natural ageing beauty - deepening lines and wrinkles can also be a sign of our skin not being as healthy as it could be. Using products that are specially formulated for the eye area can have great results, when it comes to eye bags, puffy eyes and lines and wrinkles in the eye area.
Dermalogica Age Reversal Eye Complex
This powerful eye cream contains retinol, which may seem like a strange choice for the delicate eye area. However, Dermalogica have created a safe and effective formula that doesn’t irritate the skin around the eyes. Retinol (Vitamin A) can visibly reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, by stimulating collagen production - when your collagen levels drop, fine lines and wrinkles can appear deeper as the skin is less plump and can seem hollow.
At the same time, this eye treatment focuses on reducing dark circles and rehydrating the eye area with microencapsulated niacinamide and Ash Tree Bark Extract. It also has a special Age Reversal Firming Complex that includes vitamin C for antioxidant properties to fight free radical damage.
It is a really effective treatment but does contain retinol so can be not ideal for some sensitive skin types.

Guinot Longue Vie Yeux
This super lightweight gel-like cream has a vitamin enriched formula to tackle ageing around the eye area. It has a complex blend of vitamins, amino acids and botanical extracts which work to renew the cells around the eye area and bring the skin back to full health. At the same time, horse chestnut works to ease areas of congestion that can lead to dark circles and puffy eyes. Finally wheat proteins work to minimise fine lines and wrinkles for healthy, happy eyes!

Payot Hydra 24+ Regard Glacon
This handy roll on eye treatment focuses on hydration as a key to skin health around the eye area. It can be really easy for the delicate skin around the eyes to dry out and get irritated.
