5 Reasons Why Dermalogica's Skin Smoothing Cream Might Not Be For You
At Jersey Beauty Company, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all skincare answers.
Your skin is unique, with its own unique concerns. So your skin care needs will be unique too.
We love finding loads of amazing new products and telling you all about them. We also love asking skin therapists for their expert view – all to help you choose the right selection of skin care products for your unique needs.
So we asked Dermalogica skin therapist Emma to tell us more about Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream, so you can decide if it’s the right choice for you and your skin needs.
What is Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream?
It's a medium weight moisturiser with a botanical and vitamin blend that works to target tone and suppleness in the skin.
Why is it so popular?
The texture - it is a medium weight so it's not too heavy. It's light enough to not feel like it’s suffocating your skin but heavy enough for you actually feel like you're getting enough from it.
The effects - if you stop using it, you notice a difference in your skin, because your skin degrades quickly. It keeps your skin healthy, it puts the moisture back in it, it helps to smooth any unevenness and any rough patches on the surface. So the effects make it really popular.
And it says a lot that even though Dermalogica have increased their prices, as of the 1stApril 2017, by around 9% across their range, it remains a really popular product.
Surely it’s a great choice for everyone then?
Not exactly. Like any of the Dermalogica products, which are developed to meet individual skin care needs, the Skin Smoothing Cream will work better for some skin needs than others.
We asked skin therapist Emma to give us five reasons it might not be right for you.
5 Reasons Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream might not be for you
1. You have chronically dry skin
Now it’s important to point out we are talking about chronically dry skin, not just skin that is prone to dryness. Chronically dry skin may react to stronger natural ingredients and so the Skin Smoothing Cream might be too strong for your skin.
This is because Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream has Arnica in it - a flower extract. The reason it's in there is actually because it's great at putting the hydration back in at a deeper level because it is quite an active ingredient. Another benefit to arnica is that it's very calming and soothing. Because it is an active ingredient it can cause some people to have sensitivity and skin to react. It’s important to work out if your skin is reacting or just getting used to the product – as longer term it is great for dry skin.
2. You crave an oil free moisturiser
We’ve talked a little bit about the texture of Skin Smoothing Cream already. It’s a medium weight moisturiser. It will leave some residue on your skin, as it works to repair and protect the lipid barrier. It will give your skin a really glossy feel, as it is brightening. If you are looking for an oil-free moisturiser this isn’t the one for you. But it’s important to remember that if your skin is dehydrated or dry, you may need a moisturiser that helps to repair that barrier.
3. You want something 100% fragrance free
If you’re looking for 100% fragrance free, then this isn’t the product for you. It doesn’t contain any artificial fragrances. But it does contain natural fragrance – like Mallow – which we think smells amazing by the way!
4. You want to smooth deep wrinkles
So we’ve already established this is a skin smoothing cream. So it’s perfect for wrinkles and fine lines? Well, it has amino acids which have a great plumping effect on tissue that may have died or degraded over time. So it will have an effect on skin tone, making the surface smoother. It doesn’t contain hyaluronic acid, which is the stuff we often talk about at Jersey Beauty Company, that holds up to 1000 times its weight in water and is great for really dehydrated skin, with deepening lines and wrinkles. If this is a concern for your skin, you need to be looking at Dermalogica’s Age Smart range for a product better suited to your skin concerns.
5. You want to radically brighten age spots and hyperpigmentation
Although Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream does have mallow extract which is great for evening up skin tone and targeting darker areas on your skin, if you have unique concerns with pigmentation then you can look more towards Dermalogica Power Bright line, skin therapist Jodie recommends. This range has been developed for your specific concerns.
So who is Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream for?
It is a great product for skin in your twenties and thirties, specifically targeting three areas:
Dehydrated skin type – it’s got extracts of Mallow, Cucumber and Arnica soothe and hydrate the skin, and aloe to moisturise and promote healing which can help prevent the appearance of dehydration lines.
Uneven Skin Tones – if you have some areas of your skin that look darker and uneven, due to texture, this is a great smoothing product for uneven skin tones. The mallow extract is great for this.
Sensitivity and Healing – mild scarring - Silk Amino Acids help to smooth skin and improve skin texture. If you have mild scarring, you might want to look at a daily exfoliator before using the Skin Smoothing Cream – this will remove dead cells and the Skin Smoothing Cream can help to plump up new cells.
We love Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream – and lots of you love using it. It’s not for everyone, but then we don’t think a one-size-fits-all skin care product exists, and if someone invented one we’d be dubious. Your skin is unique – it has unique concerns at different times of your life. So if you are concerned about premature ageing of your skin – that’s when the environment, weather and stress starts to have an effect on your skin – then this product will likely be great for you. If you have more mature skin and are concerned about deepening lines and wrinkles, due to dehydration, then you might want to look at Dermalogica’s Age Smart range.
Whatever your skin needs, you deserve the right products for the happy, remarkable you!
