Gemma won our recent competition to go and see ‘The Help’ at her local picturehouses cinema.  Here’s her story:

The evening began with a lovely coffee at the Picturehouse- which I hadn’t been to before and would definitely return to for the experience.

I read the book by Kathryn Stockett last year and loved it.

Set in Mississippi during the 1960s, a southern society girl returns from college determined to become a writer, but turns her friends’ lives — and a small Mississippi town — upside down when she decides to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent southern families.  Aibileen, Skeeter’s best friend’s housekeeper, is the first to open up — to the dismay of her friends in the tight-knit black community.  Despite Skeeter’s life-long friendships hanging in the balance, she and Aibileen continue their collaboration and soon more women come forward to tell their stories — and as it turns out, they have a lot to say.

I wasn’t sure how the film would live up to the book but really wanted to see it anyway, so I was thrilled when I found out I had won tickets!

The film was very true to the book and in turn had me laughing, crying, laughing and crying.  A real roller coaster of emotions.  I gasped in shock when the rest of the audience did (I won’t say why in case you want to see the film).  I thought the Director, Tate Tayler, cast the characters perfectly and the film was very well shot.  The film really brought the book to life and had me remembering all the detail of the book. We hadn’t appreciated the film was 146 minutes and were shocked at the time when we came out as the time flew past. I would even go and see the film again!
